Many veterans who are new to the VA Loan Program wonder about how important it is to have discharge papers. The fact of the matter is a veteran must have at a minimum a certified copy of their DD-214 before they can qualify for a VA Loan. If you currently do not have your discharge papers for qualification, there are a number of ways you can obtain the paperwork.

Obtaining Veterans Discharge Paperwork

The most important document you need is the DD-214. This document describes your character of service, any awards you may have received and whether or not you are a veteran of a foreign war. The most important piece of information is the character of service section. Of course, all veterans want an honorable discharge, and the character of service section provides that information. However, there are other types of discharges that include General Discharge, Other than Honorable Discharge and the dreaded Dishonorable Discharge. Those three types of discharges usually disqualify you from a VA Loan.

Therefore, if you do not have your discharge paperwork, you need to use the many avenues available to obtain the DD-214. Request a copy from the National Archives and Records Administration that is a division of the Veterans Administration. Have your dates of service, war record and character of service information available when you request a copy of your DD-214.
